FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)
at the Thomas Harrison Middle School Library

What do I need to check out books?

Your student ID number. We can help you remember if you forget, but this number is also your computer password and your lunch number.

When can I come to the library?

You will come at least once a week with your Language Arts Teacher, but you may also come any other time you have a pass from your teacher.

How many books can I check out?

It depends. Generally we prefer that you stick to two books at a time, but we are easily persuaded to let you have more, as long as you are generally responsible and are not checking out a bunch of books that we know other students will be looking for.

Do you have comic books?
Yes, they are on a shelf in the middle of the library and may be checked out for two days.   Book size graphic novels may go out for 2 weeks

How can I find a book?
Our catalog is available online for you to check anywhere you have Internet access, or you may check on the catalog in the library. We are always happy to make suggestions and point you to some good reading materials!

How can I sign up to help in the library?

Come and talk to us! We depend on student help to keep things running smoothly and have a variety of jobs for students to do.

Can I check out videos or DVDs?

DVDs and videocassettes are reserved for use by teachers.

Can I check out something even if I have an overdue?

Nope.

Do you charge fines for overdues?

No, but we do need you to return books and other items as soon as possible. Teachers may keep you from recess, dances, or other fun stuff if you have overdue library books, so stay on top of it!  We do charge for lost or damaged materials.

Can I check out something for my best friend?

No -- items that you check out should be for your own use.  If your friend has an overdue on his or her library account, encourage him or her to get that taken care of, but your library account is for you and YOU are responsible if your friend loses a book checked out in your name or turns it in late.

Why do you have such a wide range of reading material?

At THMS, we have students who are reading on all different levels, in a variety of languages, and with a wide variety of maturity levels. What appeals to a 10 year old reader may not appeal to a 14 year old reader, and vice versa. If you check out a book that makes you or your parents uncomfortable, simply return it and choose another.
