SOL: Language Arts 1.6 (f), 2.4 (b)

Time Required: 10 minutes per day for a week

Technology Used: SMART Board, projector, computer, SMART Notebook Word Study Sorts are available in SOLResources\Grade 1\Language Arts

Procedure:

  1. Select a Word Study list that correlates with the vowel-consonant-final-e or r-controlled Differentiated Instruction words your group is currently studying.
  2. After the Differentiated Instruction lesson, have students sort, read and write their Word Study words. Next, have students sort the words using the matching SMARTBOARD sort. Students should read the words while sorting the words and matching pictures.

Assessment: When giving the weekly Word Study test, have students sort the words as part of the test, or write the patterns for the week on the top of their test paper.

Describe how the use of technology affected student learning: Students enjoy sorting Word Study words by feature on the SMART Board. Matching the words to pictures while sorting helps to make word meanings comprehensible!

Notes:

  • When introducing the sort at the beginning of the week, it helps to discuss word meaning.
  • The SMART Board sorts can also be used as a center at a computer.
