Why can't I use smtp.harrisonburg.k12.va.us to send mail from home?|
The reason behind this change has to do with internet security. Some email administrators allow open relaying of mail, meaning
that anybody on the internet can use that SMTP server to send email. The problem is that spammers often discover email servers that
allow open relaying and they use those servers to send large quantities of bogus email. It is now becoming an internet standard
for a mail administrator to only allow SMTP relaying from computers on his or her own network in order to prevent internet spam, and we are
complying with this standard. Thus, when you are on HCPS' network, you send email through our SMTP server, but when you are at home
on your ISP's network, you send mail through their mail server or you authenticate yourself with our SMTP server.
