Children are born curious. Throughout their life children ask question and wonder about the world around them.  When your child asks, "Why is the sky blue? Where did the puddle go? How do birds fly and why can't I?,  children are trying to make sense of their world. Science is an important part of every child's education and important for making them informed citizens of the future. Foster this curiosity through inquiry with real experiences and build a love of lifelong learning through science education.

Changes in SOL testing requirements in Elementary

The 2014-2015 school year, was the first year that VDOE implemented the elimination of the 3rd grade Science and Social Studies SOL. In lue of the SOL tests, school systems were tasked with creating local assessments. These assessments could include Authentic Assessments, Performance Based Assessments (PBA), multiple choice tests or standardized tests to meet the requirements.  The guidance around these assessments provided by the VDOE states,

“The existing SOL test blueprints organize the strands for each subject area into reporting categories. They can be used to help identify which strand each SOL statement falls under. As long as the local assessment covers some SOL from each strand and/or reporting category, it should meet the criteria”.

Integrated Local Assessments

For the 2015-2016 school year, we will implement three performance based assessments that meet the requirements of the VDOE. Two of these assessments will be integrated with content from Social Studies and Science. Harrisonburg City School employees can view these assessments at the link below.
