Elementary Counseling Program
Talk It Out! is a city wide conflict resolution program that teaches elementary students how to solve their own conflicts. Talk It Out! focuses on resolving real-life problems that occur in most classrooms, such as teasing, put downs, pushing, hitting, cheating, gossiping, or refusing to share.
In Harrisonburg City Elementary Schools, students are taught to use the following steps:
1. Stop and Cool Off.
2. Talk and Listen.
3. Think of ways to solve the problem.
4. Choose the idea you both like.
Each teacher teaches this 4 step process in the classroom. The counselors teach and reinforce these skills through classroom guidance at all grade levels.
