Elementary Counseling Program
Our school mentoring program is supported by our local Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization, a non-profit agency whose mission is to match children with caring volunteers. These volunteers spend one hour each week with the child working on both educational and recreational activities on the school grounds. The goal of this program is to improve the child's self esteem and empower the child to do his or her best. Children to be matched with a mentor are chosen by the school and parents give written permission for the child to participate.
A mentor is an adult from the community who understands and appreciates the art of friendship. Big Brothers/Big Sisters thoroughly screens all volunteers before being matched with a student.
Currently Smithland and Spotswood have mentor programs. If you are interested in your child having a mentor, contact your school counselor.
